WHY TRAVEL IS IMPORTANT TO OUR FAMILY

WHY TRAVEL IS IMPORTANT TO OUR FAMILY: INTERVIEW WITH DANIEL VICTOR SANTOS OF MATA N’ATIVA

Daniel Victor Santos and his wife Daniela are the creators of Mata N’ativa, a family-owned hotel in the seaside town of Trancoso, Brazil. They spent years traveling around Brazil, looking for the perfect spot to settle down, create a hotel, and raise a family. Trancoso was an excellent choice—a selection reaffirmed by recent waves of international attention and an influx of world-class design talent.

Despite Trancoso’s emergence, the town hasn’t lost its head; Trancoso remains a 16th-century fishing village at heart. Horses wander along the sandy streets, soccer games form spontaneously at dusk, and paper lanterns float above garden cafés. In the evening, everyone gathers around the Quadrado—the grassy rectangle that serves as town square and community living room.

Trancoso’s beaches are long, wide stretches of white and gold sand, intermittently backed by red sandstone bluffs and coconut palms. At low tide the outlying reefs turn the shoreline of nearby Praia do Espelho into a smooth-as-glass natural swimming pool.

Daniel and Daniela’s two daughters, Valentina and Theodora, enjoy playing at the beaches near their hotel, riding horses, kayaking in the mangrove estuaries, and meeting guests from around the world.

Daniel, why is travel important to you and your family?

The exchange of experience and knowledge enriches our lives. For our children, travel is a critical component of their education; they learn how to relate to people from all over Brazil and other countries. They learn to respect differences and find harmony. Traveling is learning.

How has the pace of life in Trancoso brought your family closer together?

Trancoso offers a simpler way of living—something very different from an urban pattern. Here, we are much closer to nature and to family, which I believe are two of our most important pillars. As we do not face traffic jams or long lines, we can dedicate more time to our family’s happiness, participating more intensely in our children´s growth.

We’ve learned that our children have more openness to animals, and are more attentive to nature than we’d expected. We watch them live intensely in the moment.

Because we have a lower pressure lifestyle, we are freer to be ourselves. We have become more welcoming.

Why would you encourage families to come to Trancoso?

Trancoso blends rustic charm, exuberant wildlife, dramatic landscapes, and historical legacy. Families can live simply, enjoying life and natures gifts—animals, flowers, wind, and rain.

The area offers special opportunities for outdoor recreation. Families can kayak, ride horses and bicycles, take whale-watching tours (July to October), or relax on the beach. The pace of this town allows families to slow down and enjoy each other’s company—something that is increasingly uncommon nowadays in big cities.

Life is short and beautiful. Enjoy it!

What is the best time to visit Trancoso?

All year round. Carnival and New Year’s are peak seasons. From October to May temperatures range from the high 80s to low 70s. The “cool” months of June to September mark low season, with temperatures 80° F to 65° F. Throughout the year, you can expect refreshing ocean breezes and sunny skies; precipitation rarely exceeds four inches per month (although that may all come in one cloudburst). Come visit us!
